volt cells

Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list
I was think about battery sizes, 18650 too small n complex to put
togehter vs leaf cells to large n heavy. I'm thinking more of midsize
cells , can volt cells be force separated ? I know the pouch cells need
constricted and not punchered .

Re: volt cells

Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list
I don't think it would be worth the effort.  Each Bolt pack contains cells already configured as ~24 volt or ~48 volt modules.  I would  suggest designing something within these constraints and the physical size of original packaging.

I say this because I think it would be very difficult to take them completely apart without damaging them and then put them back together in some other form factor that would be reliable.

BTW, I found out the hard way that the broken down modules need to be constrained.  I have a few that started to swell before I realized this.

I've found the leaf cells to be an easy size/weight to work with.  The
fact that they are designed to be "air cooled" had don't have any
coolant channels built in make them relatively easy to reconfigure,
while the largish capacity (1/2 kwh each) mean you are not replicating
TOO much in the way of connections/cables. (It's still a lot of busbars
to make...)

They are only 8lbs each, so I was able to make "batteries" out of six of
them that were still a bit lighter than my 60lb lead acid "batteries"
that they were replacing...and you could certainly make smaller units if
you didn't want to have to move around a 50lb battery unit.
