Mississippi imposes new tax on hybrid, electric vehicles
]

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Owners of hybrid and electric vehicles in Mississippi
received a notice from the state Department of Revenue informing them of the
new annual tax on their vehicles.

The new tax, which took effect on October 1, will tax $75 for hybrid
vehicles and $150 for total electric vehicles annually.

The tax is in addition to regular tag fees and must be paid at vehicle
registration or renewal.

Revenue attained from the tax will go towards the state’s highway fund,
infrastructure and the Department of Transportation. (hybrid car tax)

Cathy Waterbury, The associate commissioner of the Department of Revenue and
she said the revenue attained from the tax will go towards the state’s
highway fund, infrastructure and the Department of Transportation.

State residents that drive gas-required vehicles are taxed 18 cents for
every gallon of gas they purchase. The revenue collected goes toward the
state’s transportation and infrastructure fund.

“Raise the gas tax, I don’t know," said hybrid car owner Harry Baldwin.
"There’s got to be other ways, but I always thought the gas tax was a fair
way to go. You pay for what you use.”

State leaders adopted this new tax as an alternative to raising the gas tax.

So let's see... How far does the average Mississipian drive per year?
Let's say 15,000 miles. And let's say the average car gets 25 mpg. Then
he's using 15000 miles / 25 mpg = 600 gallons, and paying $0.18 x 600
gallons = $108 tax per year.

If he switched to a hybrid Prius and doubled his gas mileage, he'd spend
half as much in gasoline taxes, or $54. But they are going to charge him
an additional $75, so $129 per year.

And if he switched to an EV, he'd pay $150 per year.

It sounds like a *penalty* for driving hybrid or electric.

/sarcasm on

Well, everyone knows electrics are heavy and slow, and they say heavy stuff
damages roads, and we don't like slow cars blocking our ultralight weight
SUVs and rolling coal lifted crewcab pickup trucks that we drive solo to
(non construction related) work every day. And it's only rich treehugger
filtered-air people who can afford those ugly battery-fire-prone
contraptions anyway. And there are too few owners to actually stop us from
doing this. So, yea, let's charge them more.

/sarcasm off

FWIW, there is a new effort at the federal level to cancel the $7500
electrified
vehicle nonrefundable credit that only reduces the amount of taxes a person
may owe, and to add a federal fee.
