FW: phev qusetion ; 240V cord

Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list
This cord on Amizon says it can do both 240 and 120.  It appears to have a
short extension cord that takes the 240v 20A plug on the EVSE and converts
it to a 120v 20 amp plug.  But it is impossible to see from the photo since
the view of the plug that should be the 120v 20A plug could be upside down
or right side up.  And that makes all the difference in the two blades?

Most/all EVSEs work on both 120vac and 240vac.  Perhaps excepting the
EVSEs supplied with new cars.  Another example:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Level-2-charger-EVSE-EV-16-Amp-110-240-v-NEMA-6-20-plug-EXTRA-LONG-23/253247820813?hash=item3af6bf140d:g:kb8AAOSw9mpaBIXd&vxp=mtr

The problem is that adapters from <whateverisonEVSE> to
<whateveryouwanttoplug> is unreasonably expensive.  Generally, around
$50 each.  Of course you can fairly easily make whatever adapter you
need but with a cosmetic penalty.  Or, cut the existing plug off and
replace it with what you need.

~6 months ago, I bought a Dusoida off of eBay, made a kludgey 14-50
adapter and left it hanging on a fence in the weather.  It does seem to
be pretty weather tight.  I've had poorer results with JuiceBoxes.  JBs
will also work on 120 and 240.

If you're shopping for a 16 amp EVSE, this is the best deal I've noticed:

Re: FW: phev qusetion ; 240V cord

I bought this charger off Amazon back in November when I got my Volt- it's
been working well and matches the Volt's max 16 amp draw. I have just what
is on the ebay deal no adapter cord.  Apparently yes it can adapt down to
120v with a adapter cord, removes one of the hots for a ground I believe.
The backwards can be done with a standard volt charger, the unit is exactly
the same but the cord is different for 220v Europe markets.  I thought
about doing that but then I would end up forgetting it at home and not have
a charger onboard.  As well the Volt is limited to 12 amps at either
voltage so probably a whole extra hour to fast charge, so impatient lol.
Like most reviews the J1772 plug is a little tight but not overwhelming if
you have any arm strength.

Actually, you'd make an adapter cord that takes the Hot and Neutral from the 120V plug, and connects those to the 2 Hots of the 240V plug.  (also connect Ground to Ground)

Robert,
If you are interested - I have a couple Leaf chargers that I converted
to allow plugging into either 110 or 240.
I can sell you one or I can show you how to convert the standard 110V
only Leaf charger to allow 240V as well.
Cor.
